Vehicle/Axle Stands

Removal

NOTICE: Use care when positioning the front axle housing or the vacuum lines to the axle solenoid may become disconnected or damaged.

NOTE: Discard all engine mount fasteners and install new fasteners.

4x2/4x4

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
   Refer to: Jacking and Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).
   

1. On both sides.
   Index-mark the hood hinge location.
   

1. Remove the nuts and the hood.
   

1. 1. Release the clip.
      
   2. Detach and position the hood shock aside.
      

1. If equipped.
   Remove the engine appearance cover retainers, release the engine appearance cover from the rear retainers and then remove the engine appearance cover.
   

1. Remove CAC intake pipe.
   Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Intake Pipe (303-12 Intake Air Distribution and Filtering - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS), Removal and Installation).
   

1. Remove CAC outlet pipe.
   Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Outlet Pipe (303-12 Intake Air Distribution and Filtering - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS), Removal and Installation).
   

1. Remove the intake manifold.
   Refer to: Intake Manifold (303-01 Engine - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS), Removal and Installation).
   

1. Remove the right rear ignition coil.
   Refer to: Ignition Coil-On-Plug (303-07 Engine Ignition - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS), Removal and Installation).
   

1. Remove the cowl panel.
   Refer to: Cowl Panel (501-02 Front End Body Panels, Removal and Installation).
   

1. Remove the bolt and pin-type retainers and the air cleaner inlet tube.
   

1. Remove the pin-type retainers and the air deflector.
   

1. On both sides.
   Index-mark the hood hinge location.
   

1. On both sides.
   Remove the bolts and the hood hinge.
   

1. Install the special tools.
   Install Special Service Tool: 303-F070  Support Bar, Engine. , 303-1246  Engine Spreader Bar. , 303-1654  Lift Eyes.
   Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

1. Remove the bolts and the transmission housing cover.
   

1. Remove the bolts and the underbody shield.
   

1. If equipped, remove the front driveshaft.
   Refer to: Front Driveshaft (205-01 Driveshaft, Removal and Installation).
   

1. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

   Remove and discard the LH catalytic converter flange nuts.
   

1. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

   Remove and discard the RH catalytic converter flange nuts.
   

1. NOTICE: Only use hand tools when removing the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.

   Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.
   

1. NOTICE: Only use hand tools when loosening or tightening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.

   Remove and discard the RH engine mount through bolt.
   

1. NOTICE: Only use hand tools when loosening or tightening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.

   Remove and discard the LH engine mount through bolt.
   

1. Raise the engine approximately 75 mm (2.95 in).
   

1. NOTICE: Only use hand tools when removing or installing the engine mount-to-frame bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-frame nut plate can occur.

   Remove and discard the 3 LH engine mount-to-frame bolts.
   

4x4

1. Using a holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
   

1. 1.   WARNING: Install a new steering column shaft bolt. Reuse could result in bolt failure and loss of vehicle control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

      Remove and discard the steering column shaft bolt.
      
   2. Separate the steering column shaft U-joint from the steering gear.
      

1. Remove the steering gear boot.
   

1. Using an adjustable stand, support the front axle.
   Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

1. Remove and discard the lower front axle carrier mounting bushing bolt.
   

1. Remove and discard the axle shaft housing carrier bushing nut and the bolt.
   

1. NOTE: After loosening the bolt, it may be necessary to reposition the axle assembly to prevent interference with the steering components when removing the bolt.

   Remove and discard the upper front axle carrier mounting bushing nut and the bolt.
   

1. Using an adjustable stand, lower the axle to allow clearance for the LH engine mount to be removed.
   Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

4x2/4x4

1. Remove the LH engine mount.
   

1. 1. Inspect the engine mount-to-frame nut plate for thread damage.
      
   2. If the nut plate is damaged, remove and discard the engine mount-to-frame nut plate.
      

1. NOTE: If necessary, the following 4 steps are to remove the LH engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket.

   Detach the generator wiring harness from the oil filter adapter.
   

1. Detach the generator wiring harness from the engine front cover.
   

1. Detach the generator wiring harness retainer from the engine block.
   

1. Remove the bolts and the LH engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket. Discard the bolts.
   

Installation

4x2/4x4

1. Clean the engine mount-to-cylinder block and engine mount-to-frame mating surfaces of any dirt or foreign material prior to installation.
   

1. NOTE: If necessary, the following 4 steps are to install the LH engine mount insulator-to-cylinder block bracket.

   Install the LH engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket and install the new bolts in the sequence shown.
   Torque: 57 lb.ft (77 Nm)

1. Attach the generator wiring harness retainer to the engine block.
   

1. Attach the generator wiring harness to the engine front cover.
   

1. Attach the generator wiring harness to the oil filter adapter.
   

1. NOTE: Replace the nut plate with part number W716699-S439.

   If removed, install a new engine mount-to-frame nut plate.
   

1. Position the LH engine mount and hand tighten the new engine mount-to-frame bolts.
   

4x4

1. NOTICE: Use care when positioning the front axle housing or the vacuum lines to the axle solenoid may become disconnected or damaged.

   Using an adjustable stand, raise the front axle carrier into position.
   Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

1. NOTE: It may be necessary to reposition the axle assembly to prevent interference with the steering components when installing the bolt.

   Install the new upper front axle carrier mounting bushing nut and the bolt finger tight.
   

1. Install the new axle shaft housing carrier bushing nut and the bolt finger tight.
   

1. Install the new lower front axle carrier mounting bushing bolt.
   Torque: 129 lb.ft (175 Nm)

1. Tighten the axle shaft housing carrier bushing bolt.
   Torque: 129 lb.ft (175 Nm)

1. Tighten the upper front axle carrier mounting bushing bolt.
   Torque: 129 lb.ft (175 Nm)

1. Remove the adjustable stand.
   Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

1. Install the steering gear boot.
   

1. 1. Position back the steering column shaft U-joint to the steering gear.
      

   2.   WARNING: Install a new steering column shaft bolt. Reuse could result in bolt failure and loss of vehicle control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

      Install a new steering column shaft bolt.
      Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

1. Remove the holding device from the steering wheel.
   

4x2/4x4

1. NOTICE: Only use hand tools when removing or installing the engine mount-to-frame bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-frame nut plate can occur.

   Torque the LH engine mount-to-frame bolts in the sequence shown.
   Torque: 129 lb.ft (175 Nm)

1. Lower the engine to the installed position.
   

1. NOTICE: Only use hand tools when loosening or tightening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.

   Install the new LH engine mount through bolt.
   Torque: 258 lb.ft (350 Nm)

1. NOTICE: Only use hand tools when loosening or tightening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.

   Install the new RH engine mount through bolt.
   Torque: 258 lb.ft (350 Nm)

1. NOTICE: Only use hand tools when loosening or tightening the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.

   Remove and discard the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts. Install new transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.
   Torque: 85 lb.ft (115 Nm)

1. Install the new RH catalytic converter-to-turbocharger nuts.
   Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

1. Install the new LH catalytic converter-to-turbocharger nuts.
   Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

1. If equipped.
   Install the front driveshaft.
   Refer to: Front Driveshaft (205-01 Driveshaft, Removal and Installation).
   

1. • Install the underbody shield and the bolts.
     Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)
   • Install the underbody shield and the bolts
     Torque: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

1. • Install the transmission housing cover and attach the bolts.
     Torque: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

1. Remove the special tools.
   Remove Special Service Tool: 303-F070  Support Bar, Engine. , 303-1246  Engine Spreader Bar. , 303-1654  Lift Eyes.

1. Install the air deflector and pin-type retainers.
   

1. Install the air cleaner inlet tube, pin-type retainers and bolt.
   

1. NOTE: Align the index marks made during hinge removal.

   On Both sides.
   
   • Install the hood hinge and bolts.
     Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)
   • Install the fender to hood hinge bolts.
     Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

1. Install the struts.
   

1. NOTE: Align the index marks made during hood removal.

   Position the hood and install the nuts.
   Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

1. Install the right rear ignition coil.
   Refer to: Ignition Coil-On-Plug (303-07 Engine Ignition - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS), Removal and Installation).
   

1. Install the intake manifold.
   Refer to: Intake Manifold (303-01 Engine - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS), Removal and Installation).
   

1. Install the CAC outlet pipe.
   Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Outlet Pipe (303-12 Intake Air Distribution and Filtering - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS), Removal and Installation).
   

1. Install the CAC intake pipe.
   Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Intake Pipe (303-12 Intake Air Distribution and Filtering - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS), Removal and Installation).
   

1. Install the cowl panel.
   Refer to: Cowl Panel (501-02 Front End Body Panels, Removal and Installation).
   

1. Slide the engine appearance cover into the retaining bracket and install the retainers.
   Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

1. Start and check the exhaust system for leaks.
