Removal

  1. Remove the rear axle assembly.
    Refer to: Axle Assembly (205-02 Rear Drive Axle/Differential - Vehicles With: Ford 9.75 Inch Ring Gear, Removal and Installation).
  1. NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

    Transfer the rear axle assembly from transmission jack to the work bench.
  1. NOTE: Differential with eLSD shown, non eLSD is similar.

    Remove the bolts and the differential housing cover.

Installation

  1. NOTE: Remove all of the silicone gasket and make sure the surfaces are free of oil before applying the new silicone gasket.

    Clean the gasket mating surface of the axle and the differential housing cover.
    Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation (303-00 Engine System - General Information, General Procedures).
  1. NOTE: Care should be taken not to allow RTV sealant spillage in bowl of differential carrier.

    Apply a new, continuous 2-3mm bead of sealant to the differential housing as shown.
    Material: Motorcraft® Ultra Silicone Sealant / TA-29 (WSS-M4G323-A8)
  1. NOTE: The differential housing cover must be installed within 5 minutes of application of the silicone, or new sealant must be applied. If possible, allow one hour before filling with lubricant to make sure the silicone sealant has correctly cured.

    Install the differential housing cover and the differential housing cover bolts.
    Torque: 33 lb.ft (45 Nm)
  1. NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

    Transfer the rear axle assembly from the workbench to a transmission jack.
    Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack
  1. Install the rear axle assembly.
    Refer to: Axle Assembly (205-02 Rear Drive Axle/Differential - Vehicles With: Ford 9.75 Inch Ring Gear, Removal and Installation).
