System Operation
Principles of Operation
An eLSD system ensures the rear wheels are receiving sufficient torque by use of an electronic control unit, and an infinitely variable clutch with pre-emptive controls. The system electronically monitors inputs from the rear wheel speed sensors and in the event of slippage, transfers additional torque to the rear wheels to stabilize traction.
The eLSD feature allows the ABS to override the engaged state during special maneuvers. In most instances the eLSD and ABS systems work in conjunction to deliver the torque to the rear wheels while reducing wheel slip.
If there is a mulfunction in the eLSD system "CHECK LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL" message is displayed in the IPC message center to let the operator know that the eLSD system is not functioning properly. The eLSD system may overheat under harsh driving condition, a different than the recommended size of tire installed or the DCMR is not receiving all of the necessary HS-CAN signals, a "ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL REDUCED TORQUE" message is displayed in the IPC message center. In such cases, the eLSD system goes into a "LIMP HOME" state and will operate at a reduced torque.
In the event that the eLSD system has overheated, the IPC message center displays, "ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL TEMPORARY DISABLED" to let the operator know that the eLSD system is not active. To resume eLSD system to normal function:
Drive Mode | Engage a | Disengage | Re-engage a |
Normal | 65km/h (40mph) | 65km/h (40mph) | 57km/h (35mph) |
Grass/Gravel/Snow | 40km/h (25mph) | 40km/h (25mph) | 32km/h (20mph) |
Sand | 100km/h (62mph) | 100km/h (62mph) | 92km/h (57mph) |
Sport | 65km/h (40mph) | 65km/h (40mph) | 57km/h (35mph) |
Eco | 65km/h (40mph) | 65km/h (40mph) | 57km/h (35mph) |
Mud/Ruts | 65km/h (40mph) | 65km/h (40mph) | 57km/h (35mph) |
Tow/Haul | 65km/h (40mph) | 65km/h (40mph) | 57km/h (35mph) |
aThe eLSD (electronic limited-slip differential) system engages/re-engages at or below the speed noted.
When the operator activates the locking feature, a green locker icon appears in the IPC . Additionally, a lock icon appears on the rear axle in the off road screen and trailer towing screen. If the vehicle is driven above the disengagement speed the icon will turn grey and the lock over the rear axle will disappear, alerting the driver that the rear axle is no longer locked, but the system is active. Once the vehicle speed drops below the re-engagement speed, the speed locker icon turns green and the lock icon will reappear over the rear axle.
In order for the eLSD system to be fully functional, the following conditions must be met:
Preliminary Inspection
Visually inspect the CV joints, housing, boots, and clamps for obvious signs of mechanical damage.
