Lincoln Navigator: Steering Column / Steering Column. Removal and Installation
Removal
NOTE:
Power adjustable column shown, manual column similar.
NOTE:
Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

Depower the SRS .
Refer to: Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering (501-20B Supplemental Restraint System, General Procedures).

NOTE:
This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
Remove the SCCM .
Refer to: Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) (211-05 Steering Wheel
and Column Electrical Components, Removal and Installation).

Remove the steering column shrouds.
Refer to: Steering Column Shrouds (501-05 Interior Trim and Ornamentation, Removal and Installation).

NOTICE:
Make sure that the steering wheel does not rotate or damage to the clockspring may occur.
Secure the steering wheel.

Release the clips and remove the steering column opening trim panel.
-
Remove the bolts and the steering column reinforcement panel.
Torque:
80 lb.in (9 Nm)

NOTE:
Vehicles equipped with power adjustable steering column shown, all others similar.
Includes deployable column connector.
Disconnect the electrical connectors, release the retainers and position the wire harness aside.

Remove the push pins and remove the LH insulation panel.
-
Disconnect the electrical connector.

WARNING:
Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may
result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss
of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in
serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).
Disconnect the steering column upper shaft from the steering column.

Remove and discard the steering column shaft bolt.
Torque:
22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

Disconnect the steering column upper shaft from the steering column.

WARNING:
Do not reuse steering column nuts. This may result
in fastener failure and steering column detachment or loss of steering
control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury
to vehicle occupant(s).
Remove and discard the retainers and remove the steering column.
Installation

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Torque the steering column retainers following the sequence shown.
Torque:
18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
Vehicles with power adjustable steering column

NOTE:
This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
If a new memory steering column has been installed,
use the steering column control switch and set the soft stops as
follows.
-
Move the column rearward until it reaches the
end of travel and hold the switch for 2 seconds after the column has
reached the end of travel.

Move the column in the same direction until it
reaches the end of travel again and hold the switch for 2 seconds after
the motor has reached the end of travel. This clears any unintended soft
stops.

Move the column forward until it reaches the end
of travel and hold the switch for 2 seconds after the motor has reached
the end of travel.

Move the column in the same direction until it
reaches the end of travel and hold the switch for 2 seconds after the
motor has reached the end of travel. This clears any unintended soft
stops.

Repeat the sequence moving the column up and down.

Install the steering column and the retainers.
Torque:

Other information:
Inspection
NOTE:
Do not use a caustic cleaning solution or a wire brush to clean the pistons or damage can occur.
Clean and inspect the (1) ring lands, (2) pin bosses,
(3) skirts and the (4) tops of the pistons. If wear marks, scores or
glazing is found on the piston skirt, check for a bent or twisted
connecting rod...
